Diese Woche ist leider (mal wieder) etwas schwierig im Bezug auf meine Arbeitszeiten…es kann sein, dass ich nur meinen Unterhalt verdienen werde, was mich ein bisschen nervt, aber ich nicht viel dagegen tun kann. Zumindest habe ich dadurch Zeit für einen Blogeintrag…

Nachdem ich meinen Job öfters erwähnt habe, will ich euch auch mal „meine Arbeit“ zeigen…Ich habe ein Bild gemacht, von den Geländern, die mein Boss und ich in den letzten Wochen zusammengebaut haben…alles ist selber gemacht und ich kann euch sagen, dass es verdammt kompliziert manchmal ist…

Mein zweites Bild zeigt mich in meiner „Arbeitskleidung“. Seit dem Wochenende herrschen hier jeden Tag Temperaturen, um die 35 Grad Celsius, was nicht nur die Arbeit erschwert, sondern auch gefährlich macht! Die Gefahr von Hitzeschlägen ist nicht zu unterschätzen und man muss sich mehrmals einschmieren, um nicht Verbrennungen zu erleiden…das geht hier ziemlich schnell und es reicht schon eine Stunde in der Sonne ohne Sonnencreme, um ziemlich rot zu werden (um meine Mutter zu besänftigen: „ja, ich schmiere mich immer ein“ )

Luke und ich haben mittlerweile auch ein Schwimmbad ausfindig gemacht, in dem wir sicherlich ab und zu die Sonne geniessen werden die nächste Zeit!

Als letztes sei noch gesagt, dass die Rettungskräfte in und um Melbourne jetzt schon Angst haben vor Buschfeuern. Letztes Jahr am 7. Februar rollte anscheinende eine „Flammenwand“ auf Melbourne zu und hat 173 Menschen das Leben gekostet. (Zur Besänftigung: Bis irgendein Feuer unser Hostel erreicht, bin ich schon längst in Sicherheit!)

This week I got once again problems with my working hours…I could end up to only earn the money for my food and my rent, which is starting to get in my nerves, but there is not really anything I can do…Due to my „free time“ I am able to write some more about my life here…

I have been writing about my job a couple of times already, so I want to actually show you, what my boss and I did for the last 2 weeks. On one of my pictures you are able to see the balustrade we made  just with timber and nails…I think it turned out pretty nice!

My second picture shows me in my „working clothes.“ Since the weekend there have been temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit, which not only makes work harder, but even dangerous. You have to be careful about heat stress and sunburns. Especially drinking water and putting lots and lots of sunscreen on is important. It only takes about an hour in the sun without sun blocker and you will turn red as lobster…

Beside that Luke and I found a nearby swimming pool, which we are going to visit quite often over the next time…

At last I want to give you notice that the fire department and the government in Melbourne are really worried about the possibility of busfires…there was a huge firestorm last year in February, in which 173 people did…(but I can also let you know that before a fire would reach our hostel, I would already be far away and somewhere secure…)

Wie ihr alle wisst, war letzten Samstag Halloween! In unserem Hostel gab es eine verrückte Karaokeparty und Lukas und ich hatten einen Riesenspass Ich glaub die Bilder können dasganz gut vermitteln, deshalb werde ich gar nicht viel mehr schreiben!

As you (hopefully) all know last Saturday was Halloween! At our hostel a crazy karaoke party went down and we had lots of fun I think the pictures tell their story and so fore I am not going to write much else!

Tut mir leid, dass ich euch solange nicht mehr geschrieben habe, ich war ziemlich beschäftigt. Hier aus Melbourne gibt es nur in einer Sache Neuigkeiten. Das Wetter wird besser und die Temperaturen steigen an. Ich arbeite die meiste Zeit draussen, ich kann also das Wetter den ganzen Tag geniessen. Ich kann mich also bräunen und werde gleichzeitig dafür noch bezahlt.

Allerdings muss ich sagen, dass man sich ziemlich oft einschmieren muss und es wird hier gar keine Sonnencreme unter Lichtschutzfaktor 30 verkauft, weil die UV-Einstrahlung so stark ist! Zusätzlich muss man immer eine Sonnenbrille tragen, ein Hut ist auch notwendig und 4,5 Liter Wasser am Tag sind normal…Allerdings ist das Wetter in Melbourne sehr instabil. Wie ihr auf dem Bild sehen könnt, kann es auch ziemlich stark regnen, vor allem nach einem heissen Tag wie gestern.

Ich arbeite immer noch für die gleiche Firma und ich muss sagen, dass die Arbeit zwar ab und zu anstrengend ist und das Wetter einem auch zu schaffen macht, aber ich lerne viele neue Dinge, die ich auch zu Hause dann hoffentlich wieder umsetzen kann. Zur Zeit bauen wir ein Geländer aus Holz für einen Balkon, ich lerne also den Umgang mit viele verschiedene Werkzeugen und ich lerne, auf was man besonders aufpassen muss.

Ein zusätzlicher Pluspunkt ist, dass mein Chef ein netter Kerl ist mit dem es Spass macht zu arbeiten und er geht seine Arbeit ohne Hektik an. Er hat mir ein Fahrrad gegeben, das ich benutzen kann, solange ich für ihn arbeite, weil man doch größere Distanzen überwinden muss in Melbourne und es einfach zu viel kostet jeden Tag mit der Bahn zu fahren…

So das war es schon wieder von mir!

Sorry I did not write in so long, but I was pretty busy the last weeks. To be honest, there is not much new to tell you about, the only thing which changed here is the weather.

The temperatures are rising and my work requires me to be outside most of the day, which is nice, because I can actually enjoy the weather…but it also means that I have to put sun lotion on about three times a day, I have to wear sunglasses and a hat and I need to drink more than ,5 litres of water everyday. I really like it, even the weather is more exhausting than the work itself most of the time. When I started to work, I got told that the weather in Melbourne can change pretty fast and as you can probably see on the picture, there are not only sunny days, but also some of pouring rain (thanks to Portland I am quite used to that ) I am still working for the same company and will continue so, until I will move on sometime in December. The good thing is about my work that the whole work atmosphere is relaxed and my boss is a nice guy. Additionally I learn plenty of new stuff I can maybe use at home to fix things or build things. My boss also lend me a bike, in order to get to work and back to the hostel and I can use it as long as I am working for him. The distances in Australia are sometimes exceeding those of America and so a bike is a good way to go by. There is also a good train system, but it is too expensive if you use it everyday…

So nachdem es heute etwas windet in Melbourne, muss ich (leider) nicht arbeiten…dafür hab ich Zeit euch ein bisschen darüber zu informieren, was wir hier teilweise essen, nur um etwas gegessen zu haben. Ich muss allerdings betonen, dass wir uns mittlerweile gebessert haben und dass der „Victoria Market“ direkt um die Ecke ist, auf dem man teilweise sehr günstig Obst und Gemüse kaufen kann…

Unser Frühstück besteht meistens aus Müsli…Fertigmüsli aus der Packung vom Aldi (ja den haben wir hier auch schon ausfindig gemacht ) zusammen mit Milch und neuerdings auch mit Früchten Natürlich wird bei allem auf Zuckergehalt geschaut, wir wollen schließlich unsere Linie halten oder verbessern

Als Mittagsessen gibt es meisten nur ein Sandwich, dass wir allerdings reichlich mit Wurst, Käse, Tomaten, Essiggurken und Barbequesosse belegen…und dazu manchmal einen Apfel…

Das Abendessen ist das einzige warme Essen am Tag…Luke und ich werden langsam echt erfinderisch mit wenig Zutaten ein maximales Resultat zu erzielen…(zum Thema kochen stelle ich euch mal ein Bild rein )

Due to a windy weather I do not have to work today (unfortunately)…so for I will try to give you a little impression about my everyday meals. My eating habits were quite bad at the beginning, but lately Lukas and I have been doing better and almost reached a „healthy“ standard.

My breakfast usually is some cereal with milk…lately I started to add some fresh fruits, to get some vitamins (So far I did not become sick, I hope it will stay like that…)

My lunch normally is just a sandwich, but Lukas and I use different ingredients  to make it healthier and more substantial. We use Ham & Chicken sausage, cheese, tomatoes, pickles and BBQ sauce…and quite often we would have an apple as „dessert.“

Dinner is the only hot meal of the day and at the beginning my ingredients were pretty bad and so for my meals were often below average food…but lately it my cooking has become better and I am getting pretty good and my meals most often taste pretty good I think one reason for that is that Luke and I discovered the „Victoria Market.“ There you can sometimes buy fruits and vegetables  for just a couple of bucks and they are fresh and really tasty (yummy).

Alright, that’s it form my side…I will continue to write as soon as I get enough time to go back to the library…

ich schreibe euch mal wieder aus der schönen Stadt Melbourne! Zuerst möchte ich euch mitteilen, dass es hier jetzt langsam Sommer wird…die Temperaturen steigen stetig an und die meiste Zeit ist Sonnenschein angesagt

Neben dem Wetter geht es insgesamt auch steil bergauf! Ich habe zumindest vorerst einen „sicheren“ Job: ich versuche mich im sogenannten „water proofing“. Diese Arbeit beinhaltet vor allem Spalten und Ritzen in den Rohbauten von neuen Häusern abzudichten…vor allem in den Bereichen in denen später die Badezimmer sein sollen…es ist eine einfach Arbeit und somit leicht verdientest Geld Ich arbeite bei dieser Firma normalerweise von Montag bis Freitag und komme damit ungefähr auf 33 Wochenstunden…nicht überragend, aber immerhin etwas Zusätzlich nehme ich Jobs am Wochenende an die kurzfristig auftauchen…Letzten Samstag habe ich bei einer Umzugsfirma gearbeitet. Wir haben ein gesamtes, zweistöckiges Büro des „Australian Red Cross“ umgezogen. Bedeutet für uns jede Menge Stühle, Tische und vor allem bereits gepackte Kartons durch die Gegend tragen…anstregende Arebit, die aber gut für den Muskelaufbau ist

Gestern war ich dann noch auf einem Festival, bei dem ich Personen über das Festival einige Fragen stellen musste, damit die Veranstalter ein Feedback bekommen und Anregungen zu einer eventuellen Verbesserung. Heute habe ich dann mal einen freien Tag und morgen geht es wieder weiter mit „water proofing“, diesmal allerdings dichten wir Balkone ab….und zwar bei alten Villen, die mehrere Millionen wert sind Wunderschöne Häuser

Ansonsten will ich euch mal einen generellen Einblick in die australische Lebensweise geben, zumindest aus der Sicht, die ich bis jetzt so mitbekommen hab…

Die Australier haben einen unglaublichen Willen voranzuschreiten…die Wirtschaftskrise kümmert hier nur wenige und alles floriert weiterhin. Allerdings muss man dazu sagen, dass hier jeder Arbeiter nicht wirklich viel Respekt vor seinem Vorgesetzten hat der Vorteil ist allerdings, dass die meisten Vorgesetzten das erkennen und deshalb ihre höhere Position nicht ganz so ausleben, wie z.B. in Deutschland, was wiederum ein angenehmes Arbeitsklima schafft.

Leider muss ich allerdings auch zugeben, dass mir bis jetzt keine australischer Arbeiter untergekommen ist, der kein Prolet war Das hat seine Vorteile und seine Nachteile…obwohl die Vorteile eher überwiegen. Manche Sprüche die losgelassen werden sind nämlich so aufgeplustert, dass man gar nicht anders kann, als sich darüber lustig zu machen…

So noch ein bisschen zur allgemeinen Sprache, um genauer zu sein zum Slang und zur Umgangssprache…es gibt Australier, vor allem die die in den größeren Städten aufgewachsen sind, die man ohne Probleme versteht…es gibt allerdings auch Australier, die man aufgrund ihres Akzents nur in Brocken versteht…man kommt allerdings mit ein bisschen Improvisation ganz schnell auf das, was der andere einem sagen will.

Es gibt auch einige Wörter, die hier anstatt den mir bekannten Wörtern benutzt werden: „Hallo“, „Hi“ und „Bye“ ist z.B. „Cheers“. Noch ein Spruch der oft benutzt wird ist „no worries“, was man für fast alles verwenden kann: „alright, okay, no problem, don’t worry“. Ich habe mir den Spruch bereits auch schon in einigen Situationen angeeignet…allerdings wird er sehr oft verwendet, was manchmal sehr nervtötend sein kann!

Noch ein Beispiel für die Umgangssprache: um hier auszudrücken, dass man mit „you“ nicht einen sondern mehrere meint, wird aus „you“ im Plural „yous“. Es hat mich am Anfang ein bisschen an das „y’all“ der Southern States erinnert.

Zum Schluss will ich euch noch sagen, dass ich nun aufgrund der Umstellung auf Sommerzeit hier und bei euch Umstellung zur Winterzeit, euch nun 10 Stunden voraus bin…also wird es relativ schwierig mit anrufen Ich denke aber, ich werde mich zumindest zu Weihnachten mal melden, allerdings kann es sein, dass der Luki und ich zu der Zeit an der „Great Ozean Road“ und somit mitten im nirgendwo

So dann wünsche ich euch viel Spass beim durchlesen, ich freue mich immer über Kommentare oder E-mails von euch

Once again I am going to tell you a bit of my life over here in Melbourne. First of all I want to give you notice that finally summer time seemed to have arrived here…it is getting warmer and at midday it is already quite hot! The sun is normally out and every once in while, there are some showers, but none of them last long

Beside the good news about the weather I also got good news about my life over here. I found a job which is more or less secure, but at least it seems that I will be able to work over the next weeks there. The job is at a company which is specialized on „water proofing,2 which mostly includes to seal cracks and gaps in buildings, which are newly built. Especially the rooms where there will be the bathrooms, have to be sealed really good. It is easy work and so fore easily earned money I work for that company from Monday to Friday with an average of 33 hours a week…not the best, but at least something In addition I work on weekends, if there is any work for just one or two days. Last Saturday I worked for a company doing furniture moving. We moved a whole two-story office of the „Australian Red Cross.“ We had to move various tables, chairs and cartons, which were already packed. Hard and exhausting work, but also a good way to get a free workout.

Yesterday I had another job, doing a survey for a city council which hosted a small festival. I had to asked various questions about the whole impression people had about the event, in order to give the council a feedback and the chance to maybe improve the festival itself. Today is my day off and tomorrow I will go back, doing water proofing. This time however I will work on balconies at big mansions, each worth a couple of million dollars. Awesome buildings and quite a nice place to work at.

Beside telling you about my everyday life I want to give you an impression about the Australian way of life, at least from the point of view  I have so far…

The Australian people are eager to move on…the financial crisis struck the economy here as well but nobody really cares about it and the whole economy still flourishes. Secondly I can tell that most Australians do not really have respect for their superiors. As a result the superiors who recognize that do not use their position to look down at their employees which creates a better work atmosphere

Nevertheless I have to admit I have not met a single Australian laborer who wasn’t like a redneck Sometimes it is hard to bear but most of the time some patter are so weird and over the top that you have to smile and have to make fun of them

At the end just a few examples for accent and slang. Most of the Australians are easy to understand and you understand everything they say, but there are also those who have such a strong accent that you only get small pieces of what they are saying…but with a little help you can manage to understand at least what they want to tell you

Beside that there are some words which replace other words. As an example there is „cheers“ which can be used for „hi, hello or bye.“  A example for a slogan used very, very often is „no worries.“ You can use it to say „no problem, don’t worry, alright, okay“ and so on. Sometimes people use it all the time and it can be really annoying!

Another example for the slang is how people change the word „you“ if used in the plural form. To address a lot of people they just add a „s“ so „you“ becomes „yous.“ First time I heard that it reminded me of the „y’all“ mostly used in the southern states of America.

At last I want to give you notice that due to switching to summer time here and change to winter time on the north half of the world I am now 10 hours up front to Germany and even 19 hours ahead of Portland. Just keep that in mind!

Ich schreibe euch mal gute Nachrichten! Luke und ich haben uns mal ein bisschen umgehört bei den anderen Backpackern wegen Arbeit und uns wurde eine Agentur empfohlen, die sich auf Handlangerjobs spezialisiert ist. Wir haben uns dort dann im Internet angemeldet und ich wurde direkt am nächsten Tag aus dem Bett geklingelt, dass es Arbeit für den Luke und mich gibt…allerdings mussten wir uns ziemlich beeilen.

Die Arbeit beinhaltet vor allem, dass wir Partyzelte aufbauen…eine körperlich anstrengende Arbeit, die aber gleichzeitig auch Spass macht. Wir haben uns zusätzlich ziemlich schnell mit den Arbeiter vor Ort angefreundet, die sind einfach alle nett und freundlich und haben haben  einen typischen „easy-going-lifestyle“. Wir beide machen diese Arbeit jetzt seit 3 Tagen und haben insgesamt 18 Stunden gearbeitet. Heute Abend geht es dann wieder an den Abbau und wir sind für eine 12 Stunden Nachtschicht eingeteilt (von 20 Uhr abends bis 8 Uhr in der Früh). Mal schaun wie wir das durchstehen…

Ansonsten fangen wir gerade an Melbourne zu schätzen, das Wetter ist immer noch kalt, aber die Stadt ist einfach gigantisch (vor allem bei Nacht…) (Bilder kommen bald nach, sobald ich die Zeit hab mal welche zu machen…) Meine neue Kamera ist übrigens spitzenmäßig, auf jeden Fall ein guter Einkauf J.

Luke und ich haben ausserdem beschlossen, dass wir erst mal in Melbourne bleiben werden und dann mal im November oder Dezember weiterschauen…vielleicht nehmen wir uns über die Feiertage frei und fangen dann nach Neujahr auf einer Plantage das „Fruitpicking“ an…anscheinend eine sehr lukrative Arbeit. Soweit unser ungefährer Plan, ich bin mir allerdings sicher, dass wir alles wieder umschmeißen werden. Man kann einfach nicht wirklich planen!

So des war es vorübergehend erst mal von mir. Ich hoff es geht euch allen gut und ihr geniesst den Herbst, ich zieh euch dann auf wenn es bei mir Sommer wird J

Finally I can provide you with some good news. Luke and I just talked to the other backpackers, who stay at our youth hostel, and asked them about work. One of them told us about an agency, who specialises on labour jobs. We registered ourselves at that agency’s website and I was called the following morning. The agency had a last minute job for us and we had to hurry in order to be on time.

Our work is mostly to build up party tents, which is challenging and trains the body quite well, so we do not need any additional workouts J. We quickly got in touch with the other guys working there. They are really nice and have a “easy-going-lifestyle” which I highly appreciate. We have been building up tents for 3 days now, 18 hours total. Today we will have a 12 hour night shift (starting 8 p.m. and we will probably get off at 8 a.m.). We are curious how a night shift is going to be…

Beside that we really start to appreciate Melbourne. The weather is still rainy and cold, but the city itself is just awesome (especially at night…) (I will upload some pictures as soon as I will be able to get some…). I got me a new camera right before I left and I really like it!!

Luke and I also decide to stay in Melbourne for a while. We will probably move on around the end of November/beginning of December…Maybe we will take time off over the Christmas holidays and new year. After that we might look into getting a job a farm to do “fuitpicking,” which is supposed to be very well paid.

Alright that’s from my side, I hope you are all doing alright and enjoy the fall, I will send you pictures and laugh at you as soon as it will be summer here J

Also unsere Jobsuche verläuft weiterhin erfolglos, also werden Luki und ich vermutlich erst mal ins Hinterland gehen und uns da um einen Job in der Landwirtschaft bemühen…sollen anstregende Jobs sein, bei denen man aber anscheinend jede Menge Kohle verdienen kann…

Es ist auf jeden Fall mal interressant wie schnell einem das Geld aus den Fingern rinnt, wenn man ständig laufende Kosten hat…wir schlagen uns allerdings ganz gut durch (auch wenn unsere Ernährung nicht gerade die gesündeste ist, die man generell haben kann…). Zusätzlich war meine Woche ein Wechselbad der Gefühle, allerdings bin ich froh dass ihr mich alle so gut unterstüzt und ich finde so langsam meine Wege diese komplett übermannenden Gefühle unter Kontrolle zu bringen…

Ich hoff mal bei euch ist alles weiterhin alle positiv (oder zumindest das meiste )

Hey everybody!

Our job search has been rather unsuccessfully, so Luki and I probably will go deeper into the country to get a job at a farm. The jobs there are supposed to be quite hard, but good paid jobs.

The first week already gave me an impression how money slowly, but constantly disappears as soon as you have fixed cost for food, accommodation and so on…nevertheless we handle our situation quite well (even we are far away from a optimum nutrition…). Additionally during my first week  my feelings have been a roller coaster, so i spend a lot of energy just to control them…but lately I found my ways to get along or suppress them.

I hope everything is alright with all you guys!

Ausserdem fällt mir  dem Abschied aus Deutschland doch schwerer als gedacht…

Naja ich werde mich weiter auf Jobsuche machen, ich hoffe es klart etwas auf in den nächsten Tagen…

Finding a job has been  a search without a clear goal so far and additionally I have to admit that I lack in having the certain easiness to act cool enough and not to let the current situation come to close to me…I am putting pressure on me, more than I should…

Further saying goodbye to Germany has been harder than I expected…

Well, I will go back to find a job. I hope my job search will be more successful the upcoming days…

Am ersten Abend wurden wir von Gabi und Wolfgang (Freunde unserer Nachbaren) am Flughafen abgeholt und hatten somit einen recht gechillten Einstand. Unsere Fahrt vom Flughafen (im Norden von Melbourne) bis zu Gabi und Wolfgang nach Hause hat fast 1 Stunde gedauert. Man muss allerdings dazusagen, dass beides in Melbourne liegt (nur um euch die Größe einer australischen 4 Millionenstadt mal bildlich zu machen).

Am ersten (ganzen) Tag sind der Luki und ich erst mal mit der S-Bahn in die Stadt gefahren, um uns einen Gesamteindruck zu verschaffen. Uns wurden einige Tipps gegeben, an welche Orte wir gehen sollten, allerdings haben wir nur einen Bruchteil geschafft. Allerdings haben wir gleich mal gelernt, dass das Übernachten in Jugendherbergen relativ teuer sein kann (23 $ die Nacht) und dass es doch nicht so einfach ist einen Job zu finden…Wir waren am Abend ziemlich müde, hatten allerdings beide eine recht unruhige Nacht (Denk mal, dass der Jetlack dran Schuld ist).

Am dritten Tag haben sind wir in das Stadtzentrum von Glen Waverley (die Vorstadt in der wir gerade noch wohnen) gefahren und haben uns mal generell  die Preise für Essen etc. angeschaut (Die Preise sind höher als in Deutschland, wir werden uns also irgendetwas ausdenken müssen…). Am Abend haben wir noch in einem Youth Hostel angerufen und dort Zimmer gebucht.

Heute waren wir wieder im Stadt, um uns weiterhin zu orientieren und um uns mal das Youth Hostel anzuschauen, dass wir am Vortag gebucht hatten. Das Hostel ist durchschnittlich, allerdings nicht so groß wie andere was ein eher familiäres Flair schafft. Ausserdem haben wir uns eine Prepaidkarte fürs Handy geholt, um in unseren Resumes, auf deutsch Lebensläufe, auch endlich eine Telefonnummer angeben zu können. Ansonsten werden wir heute nur noch unsere Sachen packen, um dann morgen früh ins Youth Hostel umziehen zu können…

The first three Days in Melbourne went by pretty fast and there have been good and bad times already.

We arrived on Thursday evening and got picked up by Gabi and Wolfgang (our neighbours’ friends) and drove to their home in about a hour.

On our first day Luki and me drove into the city by train to get an overall impression about Melbourne. Gabi and Wolfgang told us various places we should got to, but unfortunately we were just able to visit a few of them. Nevertheless we found out a few other things:  Firstly that staying at a youth hostel can be pretty expensive (about 23 AUS-$) and secondly that getting a job can be harder as expected…We went to bed pretty early, but did not have a really relaxed night, because we kept waking up…( I am pretty sure that it has something to do with our Jetlack).

On our third day, we took the train to the suburb center of Glen Waverley (the suburb we are currently staying at). There went to a shopping mall, to get an idea about the prices for food or everyday-things. (We found out that it was more expensive in Australia, so we need to figure out how to eat the cheapest, but also healthest way…). At night we called at a youth hostel to book two beds for the upcoming week.

Today we went again to the city center, to again get a bigger impression about the city and the job market, but we also went by the hostel, we booked our beds at, to check it out. It seems to be average, but it is small an though creates a good flair. We also bought a prepaid card for our cell phones, so we could be reached by anyone who wants to hire us after having read through our resumes. The only thing left today is packing our staff, so we can move out tomorrow and move in to our „new home“.

Our first and only stop at our one-stop flight to Melbourne was Hongkong airport. We only got two hours staying time there, so there isn’t much to tell you about, but we now know that Chinese beer tastes like water and second that bills look like „off the top2 but are truly just average…
